1 After World War Two, communism seemed to be taking over the world. Stalin blockaded Berlin in 1948.
2 In 1949, China turned communist and the USSR successfully tested their first atom bomb.
3 In 1947, the Federal Government Employee Program introduced, to rid the civil service of communists.
4 1947 “friendly” witnesses named 19 communists in Hollywood; the Hollywood Ten jailed for contempt.
5 “Proven” communist spies included Alger Hiss (uncovered by VP Nixon) and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
6 In 1950, N Korea invaded S Korea. Gen McArthur invaded China and Eisenhower sacked him in 1953.
7 Senator Joseph McCarthy (Wisconsin R) took the opportunity to gain prestige by fighting communism.
8 February 9, 1950, McCarthy made a speech to the Republican Women's Club of Wheeling, W Virginia.
9 "The State Department is infested with communists. I have here in my hand a list of 205” (or 57 or 81?).
10 McCarthy accused Truman’s administration of communism, especially Sec of State Marshall (Marshall Plan).
11 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings led to naming names, witch-hunts and blacklists.
12 Eisenhower declared that while he agreed with McCarthy's goals, he disagreed with his methods in 1952.
13 General Zwicker summoned to a hearing in February 1953. Zwicker refused to answer some questions.
14 McCarthy said Zwicker was "not fit to wear that uniform." Army, press and civilian population angered.
15 TV series See it Now, with Edward R Murrow broadcast “A Report on Senator Joseph McCarthy” in 1954.
