How to revise

You must make sure you understand everything AND that you can remember it.

It is very easy to confuse these two things.

Understanding leads you to assume that you know it, and will be able to retrieve it in an exam.

Knowing it off by heart, can lead you to think that you understand it more than you do. This means you won't be able to adapt your knowledge to fit the exam question.

Memorising facts and factors is important. This is different to studying and exploring history. For many people, this is the least enjoyable part but it has to be done.

DO space out your revision. See the forgetting curve.

DO make it fun and competitive.

DO: make your brain do something, e.g.

  1. draw a diagram to explain the causes.

  2. rewrite the points from a new perspective

DON"T sit back and relax - you will understand it but you won't remember it.

If you watch a video, write yourself some questions and test yourself the next day. Then the next week, then the next...

Testing is remembering!
